2026 Guggenheim Fellowship Proposal

The Silent Migration is a forensic exploration of the unseen erosion of “home.” Moving beyond just the immediate imagery of conflict, this archive documents the secondary, ‘silent’ waves of migration caused by the systemic collapse of safety, environment, and infrastructure. From the ghost villages of rural Ukraine, amid landscapes contaminated with weapons debris, mines, and unexploded ordinances, to the rapidly shifting coastline of the Chilean Maritorio and its fjordic indigenous communities caught in the grip of the “Slow Violence” of climate change and rising seas.

This antipodal project captures the intersection of environmental decay and humanitarian crisis through a juxtaposition of hemisphere and causation, combining visual forensics and acoustic ecology. The common thread: anticipation — a Ukrainian population eager and impatient to return home to a house, a village, or a city, shrouded in uncertainty, and the people of Chile who wait anxiously, fearing what lies ahead—where will they go, what will their new lives entail, will their customs survive, will their heritage endure? What becomes of the displaced, what hope remains for the future, and what fuels the will to move forward? These are the questions asked, and the answers are as unique as each person who has lived and survived the Silent Migration.

La Migración Silenciosa es una exploración forense de la erosión invisible del hogar. Más allá de las imágenes inmediatas del conflicto, este archivo documenta las oleadas migratorias secundarias y silenciosas causadas por el colapso sistémico de la seguridad, el medio ambiente y la infraestructura. Desde las aldeas fantasma de la Ucrania rural, entre paisajes contaminados con restos de armas, minas y municiones sin detonar, hasta la costa en rápida transformación del Maritorio chileno y sus comunidades indígenas fiordas, atrapadas en las garras de la "Violencia Lenta" del cambio climático y la subida del nivel del mar.

Este proyecto antípoda captura la intersección del deterioro ambiental y la crisis humanitaria mediante una yuxtaposición de hemisferio y causalidad, combinando la ciencia forense visual y la ecología acústica. El hilo conductor: la anticipación: una población ucraniana ansiosa e impaciente por regresar a su hogar, a una casa, un pueblo o una ciudad, envuelta en la incertidumbre, y la gente de Chile que espera ansiosa, temerosa de lo que les espera: ¿adónde irán? ¿qué les deparará su nueva vida? ¿sobrevivirán sus costumbres? ¿perdurará su herencia? ¿Qué será de los desplazados? ¿qué esperanza les queda para el futuro? ¿qué impulsa la voluntad de seguir adelante? Estas son las preguntas y las respuestas son tan únicas como cada persona que ha vivido y sobrevivido a la Migración Silenciosa.
